The majority of the people exploring this website will do so because they have some level of curiosity in the unexplained. In fact, one of the main purposes of this website is to make available a focus of information and resources to this core audience.
However, before you dive any deeper into this "hobby" of ours, I have a question I would like you to answer. Why? Why is the study of the paranormal important to you? Is it something that is really important at all? Some people, for example, criticize the money and time spent by NASA on space exploration. They publicly wonder why all the billions of taxpayer dollars are being spent exploring Mars when there are more urgent pressing matters here on our own planet. The lady down the street who has cancer will not benefit from the research NASA is conducting, but she would have benefited if that money had been spent on cancer research.
The main point that I am trying to make is that people will question your interest in this "hobby." It happens to us all the time. Most will tell you it is a waste of time better spent on other pursuits. Others will tell you that no matter what "evidence" you collect, no one will really believe. Even others, possibly family members, will attack your choices because of certain religious beliefs. They will insist that since their religion has no explanations for what you are trying to find, it cannot exist. Worse yet, they will tell you tales of dark spirits, dangers, and letting the Devil take control of your life. You will find that friends and family may think you are a "little off lately" and encourage you to walk away.
Therefore, we are back to my original question of, "Why?" Why do you want to do this? What do you hope to accomplish in participating in these investigations? Is it to prove something to yourself, or to others? Is it an opportunity to take a "chunk" out of current religious dogma, or is it a search for answers to an unexplained personal experience? The truth is, you and only you can answer these questions. Moreover, you need to. You need to have answers for yourself, and for the ones who will question you, so there will be no distractions, no doubt, and no apathy. We cannot give you these answers, because for each of us, they are different.
Everyone can have a different reason for wanting to participate in a group like ours. However, not everyone will be a good fit, so therein lay the reason for my question. If a person belief or disbelief is so strong that it affects the entire team, then there is no room on our team. If their motivation is to work haphazardly, or unprofessionally and thereby discredit the information gathered from a hunt, they are wasting our time. If you think this is just going to be a "gas," and will be something fun to do when drunk, you have come to the wrong place. Finally, you have to have a burning passion for this field, or you will not last. If your passion cannot motivate you to sit in front of a TV and watch 24 hours of video tape in the hopes of finding something that probably is not there, you should question your motives for joining us.
I ask all of this for one purpose, and that is to make you question yourself and your motives, to either reinforce them or to honestly judge them lacking. Now, go browse if you want to, complete an application if you are inspired. |
